The St. Louis Cardinals are one of the most successful franchises in major league history, winning the World Series 10 times, second only to the New York Yankees' 27. Notable players include Rogers Hornsby, Stan Musial, Bob Gibson and Luis Pujols. Hornsby holds the National League record for lifetime batting average (.358). During Gibson's 1968 season when he set the modern-day ERA record with 1.12, there was a stretch where he only allowed 2 runs in an astounding 92 innings. The 1980s teams focused primarily on defense, speed and "small-ball" hitting, unlike later years that featured sluggers Mark McGwire and Luis Pujols.
