The Oakland Athletics have been defined by four distinct eras: The Charlie O. Finley owned "Swingin' A's" of the 1970's that won three consecutive World Championships; the Billy Martin managed teams of the early '80's that excelled in "Billy Ball" (utilizing trick plays, double steals and suicide squeeze bunts); The "Bash Brothers" teams of the late '80s/early '90s that featured Jose Canseco, Mark McGwire, Dave Stewart and Dennis Eckersley; and the more recent "Money Ball" teams built by General Manager Billy Beane which focused on a modernized sabermetric approach to gauge the potential of players in order to compete with wealthier large-market competitors.
